Urinary Incontinence: When You Can’t Hold It In

Urinary incontinence means leaking urine by accident. It’s more common than you might think — especially among older adults and women after childbirth — but it can affect anyone, including men.

There are different types of incontinence. The most common are:

  • Stress incontinence – leaking when you cough, sneeze, laugh, or lift something
  • Urge incontinence – a sudden, strong need to urinate, followed by leakage
  • Overflow incontinence – the bladder doesn't empty properly, causing dribbling
  • Mixed incontinence – a combination of the above

Common causes include:

  • Weak pelvic floor muscles
  • Enlarged prostate (in men)
  • Nerve damage from diabetes or stroke
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Side effects from medications
  • Hormonal changes in women after menopause

Although it may feel embarrassing, incontinence is treatable. Doctors may suggest:

  • Pelvic floor exercises (like Kegels)
  • Bladder training (delaying urination gradually)
  • Medications to relax the bladder
  • Devices or minor procedures
  • Surgery in more severe cases

Incontinence is not just part of “getting old.” With the right help, many people regain control and confidence. Don’t suffer in silence — talk to a doctor about your options.
