Pediatric Urology: Common Urinary Problems in Children

Pediatric urology deals with urinary and genital issues in babies, children, and teens. While many of these conditions are not serious, early treatment can prevent long-term problems and help children grow up healthy.

Some of the most common issues seen by pediatric urologists include:

  • Undescended testicles – when one or both testicles don’t move into the scrotum before birth
  • Hypospadias – when the opening of the penis is not at the tip, but lower down
  • Bedwetting (enuresis) – common in younger kids but may need help if it continues after age 5-6
  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs) – more frequent in girls, but boys can get them too
  • Vesicoureteral reflux (VUR) – when urine flows backward from the bladder into the kidneys, increasing the risk of infections
  • Hydronephrosis – swelling of the kidneys, often due to blockage in the urinary tract

Symptoms to look out for include:

  • Frequent UTIs
  • Trouble or pain while urinating
  • Swelling in the scrotum
  • Bedwetting after toilet training
  • Abnormal appearance of the genitals

Treatments depend on the condition, and may include medication, minor surgery, or just careful monitoring. If you're concerned about your child’s urination or development, don’t hesitate to seek advice. Early support makes a big difference.
