Erectile Dysfunction (ED): Let’s Talk About It

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) means having trouble getting or keeping an erection firm enough for sex. It’s more common than many people think — especially in men over 40 — and it’s nothing to be ashamed of.

ED can happen once in a while, but if it becomes frequent, it may be a sign of a health issue. Erections depend on healthy blood flow, nerves, hormones, and mental focus. If any of these are affected, ED can occur.

Common causes include:

  • Stress, anxiety, or relationship problems
  • Medical conditions like diabetes, high blood pressure, or heart disease
  • Smoking, alcohol, or drug use
  • Side effects of certain medications
  • Low testosterone levels

Symptoms are simple: difficulty getting an erection, trouble keeping it during sex, or less interest in sexual activity.

Treatment depends on the cause, but may include:

  • Lifestyle changes like losing weight, quitting smoking, or exercising
  • Counseling for emotional or relationship issues
  • Medications such as sildenafil (Viagra) or tadalafil (Cialis)
  • Hormone therapy (if testosterone is low)
  • Devices or surgery in more severe cases

ED can be frustrating, but it’s treatable. If you're struggling with it, speak with a doctor — you’re not alone, and help is available.
