Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH): What Every Man Over 50 Should Know

As men get older, it’s common for the prostate – a small gland that helps make semen – to get bigger. This condition is called Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, or BPH. “Benign” means it’s not cancer, but it can still cause problems.

The prostate is located just below the bladder and surrounds the urethra, the tube that carries urine out of the body. When the prostate gets too big, it squeezes the urethra and makes it harder to pass urine.

Common symptoms include:

  • Needing to urinate more often, especially at night
  • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
  • Weak urine stream
  • Feeling like the bladder isn't fully empty

BPH doesn’t mean you have cancer, but the symptoms can be bothersome. If left untreated, it could lead to bladder problems or kidney damage.

Treatment options range from lifestyle changes (like reducing caffeine and alcohol), to medications that relax the prostate or shrink it. In some cases, minor surgery may be needed to remove part of the prostate and help urine flow more easily.

If you're over 50 and having trouble with urination, talk to your doctor. BPH is common and treatable – and early care can improve your quality of life.
